Dr Walter Johnson MD MPH MBA

Dr Walt Johnson has been leading the Emergency and Essential Surgical Care Programme at World Health Organization in Geneva since 2015. His tasks currently include strengthening emergency and essential surgical, obstetric and anaesthesia care in low- and middle-income countries, advancing surgical care of children, creating resource-stratified treatment algorithms for traumatic brain injury and stroke, developing pertinent treatment guidelines, and fostering strong global partnerships, among many others.

Dr Johnson completed his medical degree at Loma Linda University in California, a neurosurgery residency at SUNY-Brooklyn, and a cerebrovascular fellowship at UCLA. He was involved in academic neurosurgery until 2009, serving as Vice-Chairman of Neurosurgery at Loma Linda University.

He has been involved with global surgery for the majority of his career, with extensive experience in China and Africa.

Dr Johnson holds an MBA and an MPH from Claremont Graduate University in California. He has served on a number of non-profit boards, although this has been severely curtailed due to a very busy schedule.
