Trainees' Day Scientific Convenor
Assoc Prof Nabeel Ibrahim MB BCh FRACS FRCS FACP
- Specialist General Surgeon | Macquarie University, Sydney
Dr Nabeel Ibrahim is an Egyptian born surgeon who completed his training in surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Further postgraduate study and training was undertaken over several years at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, England and at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, US.
Following holding the position of Clinical Tutor at the University of NSW, Nabeel took full consultant positions at two major Sydney hospitals. In 1986 he developed and introduced minimal access groin hernia repair approach using a mesh technique as a day procedure. This innovation had the obvious advantages of early return to normal activity and a reduction in hospital costs. This new technique was presented by him at the 1992 RACS ASC in Canberra. Nabeel also pioneered minimally invasive endoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) in 1991 and applied the principle to the treatment of groin hernias and subsequently to all abdominal wall hernias. The results of his new work and techniques were presented jointly with Dr P Lewinsky to the 1997 RACS ASC. Further to this he was invited to present and demonstrate the technique at several international laparoscopic surgery conferences.
The Australian Hernia Centre was founded by Nabeel and is now an established centre of excellence in hernia surgery in operation for more than 10 years. The core expertise lies in minimally invasive (laparoscopic or “key-hole”) surgery for all types of hernias. The surgical approach incorporates the highest standards of modern era hernia surgery within an evidence based and optimal results framework. The Australian Hernia Centre has been the preferred hernia clinic for elite athletes and many Olympians over the past 10 years. The Centre is able to report excellence in care and safe patient outcomes with satisfied patients following in excess of 4,000 key-hole groin hernia repairs.
In addition to the impressive patient results for minimally invasive hernia repair Nabeel is currently leading clinical research in the application and long term efficacy of minimally invasive treatment (endovenous laser and radio frequency) for chronic venous insufficiency.
