Haemorrhoidectomy remains the gold standard for grade 3 and 4 haemorrhoids, in terms of long-term cure of symptoms. However, postoperative pain is often poorly controlled, despite a combination of oral and topical therapies and regular opioids. Pudendal block is effective but is short-lived.

A new technique for ongoing pudendal block has been developed, to insert fine infusion catheters, using aseptic technique, for local anaesthetic block lasting up to a week post-haemorrhoidectomy.

This procedure and early results will be presented by Prof David Lubowski.
