Abstract Submission Process

The 2026 Combined CSSANZ and GSA ASM Abstract Submission Process is now open- submit your paper before the closing date: 16:00 AEST, Monday 01 June

SUBMIT ABSTRACT

Please note the following information to help you prepare your paper:

ABSTRACT TEMPLATE

  • A maximum of two (2) abstracts will be accepted by the same author. 
  • Title should be brief and explicit
  • Research papers should follow the format of: 
    – Purpose
    – Methodology
    – Results
    – Conclusion
  • *Excluding title, authors (full given name plus family name) and institution, your abstract must not exceed 250 words.
  • *References, figures, tables are not required – please do not include them
  • Please submit your paper in WORD format only – do not PDF
  • Case studies will not be considered. Submitting a case study will be automatically deemed ineligible without notice
  • Do not submit papers on behalf of someone else. The person submitting the paper should be the person who is attending the ASM to present
  • If your paper is selected, you are required to attend the conference in person
  • If you know you are not available between 22-24 October, do not submit an abstract

*References and figures/tables, and text over the 250 word limit will be deleted without consultation prior to submitting to the Organising and Research Committees

**Due to the high volume of papers submitted, the closing date and time is final, and late submissions will not be considered.

Authors

  • The abstract submitter is listed as the first author and presenting author
  • The presenting author cannot be changed after submission
  • Ensure that all authors who contributed to the work are included and listed correctly.
  • Authors’ names should be entered as they would appear in the published abstract
  • Changing the order of the authors or removing authors after submission is not possible

The Peer Review Process

The Organising Committee invites abstract submissions for any topics relevant to General Surgery. All abstracts are to be submitted online – papers cannot be emailed.

Be sure to read the terms and conditions prior to submitting your paper. Failure to do so will not exclude you from being bound by the terms and conditions, and you will be asked to acknowledge as such during the submission process. 

All abstracts will be subject to peer review by the GSA Research & Scholarships Committee and the ASM Organising Committee. This process can take up to six weeks to complete however they will try and reduce this where they can – dependant upon the volume of papers received.

Successfully scored papers will be allocated to a podium or e-poster presentation (details below) as determined by the Committees. 

  • All abstracts submitted must be original work
  • The submitting author is responsible for the accuracy of the abstract
  • Changes to abstracts after submission will not be possible
  • Changes in presenting author will not be possible so please ensure you as the submitting author are in a position to attend the ASM
  • Registration is a condition of the abstract submission process and the presenting author is required to register to attend the ASM in order to present
  • All abstracts will be blind-reviewed by members of the GSA Research & Scholarships Committee
  • The peer-review process may take up to six weeks to complete
  • The Committee’s decision on selected papers is final and not open to discussion or reconsideration
  • Requests for feedback on paper/s will not possible due to the large volume of papers received
  • Should your paper be selected for a podium and / or e-poster presentation, you will be issued with a certificate of presentation in your name – the presenting author – only

Presentation Format

Verbal Presentation

  • Successful applicants for verbal presentations will be allocated a total of five minutes presentation time consisting of four (4) minutes presentation time plus one (1) minute for audience questions and answers – the time allowance will be strictly enforced
  • There will be free-paper sessions allocated within the three-day program
  • Successful applicants will be randomly allocated to a date and time. Once this occurs, no changes can or will be made. If you have a commitment on a particular day, please let us know as early as possible so we can factor this in, should your paper be successful
  • All accepted abstracts for verbal presentation will be published on the official ASM event app
  • All successful applicants for a verbal presentation must register to attend the ASM

E-Poster Presentation

  • All successful applicants for poster presentation will be required to supply their poster for electronic display for the duration of the ASM.
  • Further details pertaining to an electronic presentation will be supplied to the successful poster authors.
  • Selected poster presenters will be required to attend the ASM and present a short snapshot of their research during the Quick Shot Poster Session – date and time TBA
